扬帆 · 第四期

In class, we learned the abridged poem Song of the Open Road by the influential American poet Walt Whitman. The first two stanzas were discussed in class and the students were asked to write down their own understandings on the third stanza, which comprises the following lines:

The earth, that is sufficient,

I do not want the constellations any nearer,

I know they are very well where they are,

I know they suffice for those who belong to them.

Though majoring in Japanese and only in their first month of freshman year, many of the students have a strong interest in English literature, and some of their reflections are quite profound, or even philosophical.

Through Whitman's poem, I learn that he is satisfied with what he owns. He does not expect those illusory things, but pays attention to the current with a down-to-earth spirit. Walking on this open road, he is carried by the solid earth, so that he will be capable of going anywhere freely without complaints, which is sufficient for him. No matter how bright or gorgeous the constellations are, he will not deliberately press or force foreign objects to change for him, because the earth already belongs to him and there is no need to greedily possess both. This is really a valuable attitude of life, or even wisdom —— calm, unhurried and open-minded. Plain as the excerpt from this poem seems, it actually contains great spiritual power and, meanwhile, demonstrates the pure and noble human nature contrary to the troubled times.

Different from Whitman, I was often trapped in the mire of trouble, complaining about various trifles. I greedily intended to hold both “earth” and “constellations”, but often ended up with nothing. From this poem, I realize that it is optimism and contentment that bring up the strong in life. Henceforth, I wish to turn passive acceptance of suffering into an optimistic embrace of distress.

习作2

'The earth, that is sufficient, I do not want the constellations any nearer.'

I am looking up at the stars, with my feet on the ground. In those dark and dull days, I might long for the sky. But now I've made up my mind and hit onto the open road. The bright and hopeful future which the road is leading me to ought to be far wider than the sky above me. There at the end of the road exists a whole new world. Therefore, I do not need to struggle to reach for the stars or constellations. Instead, as long as I stick to the chosen path, I am content now and will be a beautiful star myself shining brightly.

'I know they are very well where they are, I know they suffice for those who belong to them.'

What one sees is often a reflection of their mood or mind. I am like the stars being where I should be. The stars in the sky also act as countless lights for me, showing me the right direction.

I shall never hesitate, nor be lost or depressed. The moment I step onto the open road, the nice future lies ahead.
